SCHOOL HOLIDAY MEAL PLAN

Why I Create a School Holiday Meal Plan (And Why You Might Want To, Too)

School holidays bring a welcome break from the usual routine—no early school runs, lunchboxes, or homework battles. But if you’re anything like me, the constant “What’s for lunch?” and “I’m hungry again!” can turn those relaxed vibes into daily chaos. That’s exactly why I create a school holiday meal plan—and let me tell you, it’s been a game-changer.

Here’s why it works for us (and might work for you too):

🌈 1. Variety Keeps Everyone Happy

Kids eat a lot during the holidays. Without a plan, I find myself reaching for the same snacks and meals on repeat—and that gets old fast. With a meal plan, I can mix it up: sandwiches one day, pasta the next, maybe a build-your-own taco station midweek. I include different cuisines, textures, and even a few fun surprises. Not only does this keep things interesting, but it also gently encourages kids to try new things.

🥦 2. It Helps Me Prioritise Nutrition

Without planning, I notice the balance of meals can slip. But when I sit down to plan, I can make sure we’re getting a good mix of veggies, protein, carbs, and healthy fats throughout the week. I don’t aim for perfection—I just aim for balance. I’ll add smoothies with hidden greens, fruit platters, or oven-baked veggie fries alongside familiar favourites. It feels good knowing I’m fueling little bodies (and mine!) with what they need.

🙅‍♀️ 3. It Tames the Fussiness

One of my biggest challenges is picky eating. But having a plan means I can get ahead of it. I involve the kids when I can—letting them pick a lunch or help prep a dinner. I also rotate meals I know they like with new or tweaked versions. Over time, their willingness to try has grown, all thanks to a little foresight and patience.

4. It Saves Time and Mental Energy

Trying to decide what to cook on the spot—while breaking up arguments or entertaining bored kids—is not fun. With a plan, I don’t waste time or headspace thinking about meals. I know exactly what we’re having and what ingredients I need. It also cuts down grocery trips (bonus!). I often prep a few meals or snacks in bulk early in the week so I’m not constantly in the kitchen.

💕 5. More Time to Actually Enjoy the Holidays

This is the biggest one. Holidays are short. I want to be playing board games, going on walks, or just snuggling on the couch—not scrambling to figure out lunch at 12:03 with hangry kids. A meal plan creates calm. It gives me more time to be present with my family, and isn’t that the whole point of the holidays?
